Ride Itineraries

We've put together some popular ride itineraries below to help you plan your Nelson/ Tasman cycling adventure.

Big Day Out

7 hours on grades 1, 2 and 3 (77km)

Start in Kaiteriteri and cycle to Nelson.  

Best suited for experienced cyclist wanting to put their head down and get pedals cranking, but still time for coffee and food along the way.  

Tunnel Fun

1.5 hours on grades 1and 2 (18km)

Start at Wai iti Domain and cycle to Norris Gully. Cycle from Spooners Tunnel Southern entrance through a 1.4km long decommissioned rail tunnel.  The Tunnel is not lit and cyclists will need torches and a warm layer of clothing.

Wai-iti Domain

  • On SH6, 5.3km south of Wakefield, on left hand side
  • Unlimited Parking
  • Cycle distance to Spooners Tunnel 11km

Belgrove

  • On SH6, 10km south of Wakefield by trail (9km by road)
  • Limited parking Monday to Friday, Weekend and Public Holiday 50+, refer to map below for further details on car parking
  • WARNING:  you need to cross state highway (100km speed limit) to get to Cycle Trail.  Please be careful.
  • Cycle distance to Spooners Tunnel 6.4km

Norris Gully

  • On SH6, 21km south of Wakefield, on right hand side
  • Unlimited Parking
  • Cycle distance to Spooners Tunnel 1.7km

Family Weekend

2 days on grades 1, 2 and 3 (77km)

Start in Kaiteriteri and cycle to Mapua.  Overnight at Mapua and then cycle into Nelson.  Get the family on their bikes for a special weekend together. 

Little Day Out

4 hours on grades 1, 2 and 3 (32Km)

Cycle from Kaiteriteri to Motueka (and back again).  A leisurely pace allowing plenty of stops for sightseeing, eating, drinking and general relaxation.  Striking vistas of Tasman Bay.
