This section of Tasman's Great Taste Trail takes you from Richmond to Wakefield via Brightwater, riding through vineyards and over the Waimea River.

Leaving Richmond from the bottom of Queen Street, where it crosses State Highway 6, the cycle trail follows an inland direction under state highway 60, and through a number of vineyards to Ranzau Road. Turn right and then left onto Pugh Road heading for the Waimea River. You cross the river via an impressive suspension bridge.

As you exit the bridge turn left onto Bryant Road and into Brightwater, a great place to stop for a drink and something to eat.

You leave Brightwater via Charlotte Lane and through an underpass before carrying straight ahead onto Lord Rutherford Road. This section continues onto Higgins Road before a right turn onto Edward Street brings you to the heart of Wakefield village.

After a stop in Wakefield, you might like to follow a different route back to Richmond.  Retrace your ride to Brightwater but this time turn left when you emerge from Charlotte Lane.  Proceed straight ahead leaving the village behind and cross the Wai-iti River.  Within a few hundred metres turn right into Palmer Road, then right again into Livingston Road.  It's a very short distance to the end of the road where there is an (easily negotiated) stile to lift your bike onto the Waimea Walk/Cycle Way.  Enjoy vineyards and rural scenery until the path emerges at the Appleby Highway.  Cross the road carefully and continue on the other side back to Richmond.
