Trail Grades and Safety

Our trails have been graded according to the trail grade standards set out by NZ Cycle Trails. You can read them here.

We recommend riders are fit and well prepared and we encourage you to know your limits and choose a trail that's suitable for all the riders in your group. Also be aware that there are areas on the trails where there is no cellphone reception. You may want to carry a Personal Locator Beacon in these areas. Check network coverage here.

Woodstock to Kohatu

Ride Length
29 km
Riding Time
1.5-3 hours
3: Intermediate
Under Construction

The section from Woodstock to Tapawera is on the Motueka Valley Highway and has more traffic than other on-road sections, especially in the summer. Please take care and keep left at all times.

After about 9km, Stanley Brook Hill requires a good bit of effort to ascend and then provides some great momentum for the roll down into Tapawera village. You can get a meal, purchase supplies from the small supermarket and brush up on some local history at the Railway or War History Museums.

From Tapawera Village you can re-join the Great Taste Trail and follow it all the way to Kohatu. Look for the trail entrance on Maitai Crescent.

A Bridge over the Baton River is under construction. However, delays due to supply issues for bridge components mean that it is now looking like completion will be April 2022. Until then the Woodstock to Tapawera section of the Great Taste Trail will continue to be on the Motueka Valley Highway over Stanley Brook Hill.
