E-bike Skills and Policy
E‑bikes on the Great Rides
E‑bike use on New Zealand’s Great Rides has grown rapidly in recent years. On some trails, e‑bike riders are now the majority of users.
New to e‑biking?
If you’re trying an e‑bike for the first time, we recommend taking a short skills lesson before heading out. E‑bikes handle differently from regular bikes — they have more power, extra weight, and different braking and gearing responses. A skills session can boost your confidence, help you ride more safely, and make your ride more enjoyable.

E‑bike Policy
Under Ngā Haerenga New Zealand Cycle Trails policy, power‑assisted cycles are allowed on all Great Rides and other off‑road trails in the network, provided they:
-
Have pedals that are the primary means of propulsion
-
Have an auxiliary electric motor with a maximum power of 300W
When in doubt, ask yourself:
1️⃣ Does the bike have pedals that can be used to propel it?
2️⃣ Is the motor 300W or less? Read the full Ngā Haerenga NZ Cycle Trails E‑bike Policy
